A placement with the hospice provides an opportunity to experience the multidisciplinary team approach to holistic patient-centred assessment.

Students are encouraged to actively participate and contribute to multi-professional conversations about patient care. There are opportunities to meet patients in an inpatient setting or through our community and wellbeing services. The NHS Community Specialist Palliative Care Team for Tameside and Glossop are also located at Willow Wood Hospice.

Willow Wood Hospice offers a fully supportive and inclusive placement experience to a wide variety of students. We welcome students from the following fields of practice: Medical, Nursing, Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy, Nurse Associates and counselling, whether it be for a full-time placement or a spoke placement.

A placement at the hospice provides students with the opportunity to become an active member of the multi-disciplinary team, experiencing first-hand the services that help support and care for our palliative patients within the community.

Our aim is to highlight the importance of providing a holistic, individualised plan of care approach. Throughout your placement you will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge on how this is achieved at the hospice, the guidance and tools that underpin this approach alongside exposure to other aspects of care and services. The Hospice champions’ reflective practice and we understand this is an important aspect of becoming a confident and versatile healthcare professional.

Due to complexity of the clients we work with, our counselling placements are offered to students in their 2nd or 3rd year of training, once they have already completed a minimum of 50 hours of clinical practice. We are often oversubscribed for these placements and are looking for students who will work well with our team, therefore, any applicants will undergo a short recruitment and informal interview process before being offered a placement.
